The London Marathon, happening on April 21, 2024, is breaking new ground for inclusivity in sports. For the first time ever, athletes rolling through the race in wheelchairs will pocket the same prize money as those racing on foot.
With a hefty prize pot boost of over $200,000, this year’s wheelchair race is dishing out a total of around $320,000 in winnings, putting it on par with the dough handed out to the fleet-footed athletes. The top four speedsters crossing the finish line, regardless of their mode of movement, will each be rewarded with a cool $55,000. Second place isn’t looking too shabby either, with $30,000 on the line, and third place finishers will be banking $22,500. Not too shabby, right?
Hugh Brasher, the London Marathon’s event director, is stoked about this landmark decision. “We’re mighty proud of our track record in championing athletes with disabilities,” he said. “And we’re thrilled to keep pushing the envelope for Paralympic sports with this game-changing move. We’ve been making big strides to turn the London Marathon into the world’s most diverse and inclusive race. This is another crucial step toward that dream.”
And guess who’s cheering on this awesome change? None other than British powerhouse David Weir, a six-time Paralympic gold medalist and an eight-time London Marathon victor.
